Radio Australia is the international broadcasting and online service operated by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Australia's public broadcaster.
ABC Radio National is an Australia-wide non-commercial radio network run by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.Radio National broadcasts national programming in areas that include news and current affairs, the arts, social issues, science, drama and comedy. Some programs are relayed on Radio Australia, the ABC's international free-to-air shortwave service.Radio National currently has 327 transmitter sites and covers over 98% of the permanently inhabited areas of Australia.[citation needed] Remote areas are served by satellite service.
Many Radio 4 programmes are pre-recorded. Programmes transmitted live include daily programmes such as Today, magazine programme Woman's Hour, consumer affairs programme You and Yours, and (often) the music, film, books, arts and culture programme Front Row. Continuity is generally managed from BBC Broadcasting House whilst news bulletins, including the hourly summaries and longer programmes such as the Six O'Clock News and Midnight News, and news programmes such as Today, The World at One and PM come from the BBC News Centre at Television Centre in White City. They were moved there in 1998 when the News Centre was opened to house both radio and TV news.[ News returned to Broadcasting House in 2008.
It is available only on digital media: DAB radio, the Internet, digital television, and in northern Europe through the Astra 2A satellite. The station plays "alternative" genres of music, including indie, classic rock, punk, jazz, funk, hip hop and classic dance. It is claimed to be an alternative to the mainstream, chart oriented Radio 1 and Radio 2. It operates a playlist of similar 'A/B/C' structure to Radio 1.
