Anyone in the know about hot new photography talent knows where to look: the renowned MA Photographic Studies 2011 Exhibition from the University of Westminster. This year’s show kicks off the London art season with a showcase of cutting-edge photography.
The independently curated exhibition of work by 13 graduates from this highly acclaimed MA photography course - described by photography writer Daniel Campbell Blight as ‘surely one of the best London has to offer’ - takes place in the spacious Ambika P3 gallery in the heart of the West End, which earlier this year hosted the prestigious Deutsche Borse Prize. Graduates of the course are drawn from an international milieu and a variety of professional and creative backgrounds, many of them already recipients of high profile awards, prizes and commissions.
The work in this exhibition addresses a diversity of themes, from the personal and public to the photographic. Photography is increasingly the dominant creative medium today, a development which subtly informs much contemporary photographic work. Through inventive exploration of subject matter and challenging practices, these photographers reframe perceptions and raise questions. The visual and conceptual rigour of the work is underpinned by a high level, and wide variety of technical skills, ranging from low-tech experimentation, through traditional analogue and chemical photography to video, light-boxes and high end digital capture and output.
Exhibiting photographers are Matthew Fagg, Paula Gortázar, Tam Hare, David Kilian Beck, Deirdre King, Davide Maione, Javier Marquerie Thomas, Bethan Mills, Tom Need, Mari Rustan, Alexandra Serrano, Gosia Sobieszek and Clement Verger.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue which includes an essay by Daniel Campbell Blight and a foreword by photographer, writer and course leader David Bate. It is curated by Elizabeth Upper, arts editor of Above Magazine.
A chaired panel conversation New Directions: Contemporary Photography Today takes place during the exhibition. Panellists include Martin Barnes, Senior Curator of Photography at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Dr. Lucy Soutter, photographer, critic and art historian and Daniel Campbell Blight, writer and curator.
